Unfinished and LGBTQIA+ Advocacy

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."

Galatians 5:22-23

From the very beginning, the position of Unfinished Community as a church has been clear; we stand united in not only affirming, but celebrating the great diversity in human gender, sexuality, and personal expression. For centuries, people in power (including those in positions of religious power) have used Scripture as a cudgel, a tool to oppress our LGBTQIA+ siblings in faith through narrow-minded interpretation, proof-texting, and outright spiritual (and even physical) abuse.

We in the Unfinished community stand up against that. We assert with pride that the life and witness of Jesus Christ, and the great testimony of the Holy Spirit declare a gospel of liberation, inclusion, and welcome; freedom from oppression and a love that surpasses all understanding.

There is nothing in the human world, no weapon we can craft, no argument we can reason, and no evil we can do which can suppress beauty God has brought forth in each of us, infinitely diverse in infinite combinations, with God's love as the sole force which binds and unites us all together. And knowing that this unity of Spirit is God's goal in our lives, we know that God is not, indeed must not, be neutral in the face of oppression.

And neither will we be.

Welcome home!

Unfinished Community Open and Affirming Statement

The members, congregants, and other participants in the life and ministry of Unfinished Community acknowledge the history of oppression, exclusion, and violence both spiritual and all too physical which rests upon our gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender siblings. In the wider church, and society at large, these beloved children of God have been excluded, rejected, and subject to great and terrible indignity.

With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we at Unfinished Community welcome and celebrate everyone in all of their authenticity. We are all different and all come from different places and possess different perspectives. Whether our differences come as a result of age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, or any other difference a person might have, we affirm that each and every person is made in the divine image of God (Genesis 1:27). In the realization that we are all united as one body in Christ, and are individually members of one another (Romans 12:5), we as a community embrace the diversity of gifts that God has placed in and among us, and we seek to embrace transformation within our own lives, our community, and the world by using those diverse gifts to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8).

Therefore we welcome persons of every sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. We welcome persons of every nationality, race, language and ethnicity; persons of every socioeconomic status or level of financial means, every age, ability, educational background and level of health into the full and complete life and ministry of this congregation.

No matter who you are, you are not only welcome, but you are affirmed, appreciated, and beloved here at Unfinished Community!
